Petra Liedl Dissertation Topics

Petra Liedl's current focus in teaching and research are sustainable transformation processes in an inter- and transdisciplinary environment. She has been dedicated to promoting a deeper understanding of the interaction of culture, climate, buildings, and energy with an interdisciplinary approach in teaching, research and practice. As faculty co-advisor of the NexusHaus, she was supporting the UT/TUM's entry for U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2015 competition, where they won several awards. The goal was to design, develop and build a modular, prefabricated, affordable water and energy efficient accessory dwelling unit as a new housing product, ensuring the viability and compatibility of its integration into the existing infrastructure of the neighborhood.

Liedl has been Visiting Professor at Technische Universität München (TUM) in Germany from 2016 to 2017 and Assistant Professor and Director of the Thermal Lab in the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin from 2012 to 2017. She has been Fellow of the Insitute of Advanced Studies (IAS) at TUM since 2016 and member of the board of the International Graduate School of Science and Engineering (IGSSE) since 2017. Petra received her Dr.-Ing. in Architecture in 2011 from TUM and was awarded the Dr. Marschall-Award of the Faculty of Architecture for outstanding doctoral theses. Prior to commencing her doctoral studies, Liedl was a research associate at the Department of Building Climatology and Building Physics, TUM and received a Ph.D. grant from IGSSE at TUM from 2007 to 2011. She served a Donald D. Harrington Faculty Fellowship in the University of Texas at School of Architecture 2012-2013. 2005 to 2015 she has been founding member and member of the board of the non-profit association ClimateDesign. From 2008 to 2009 she was Associate in Neue Verantwortung, a foundation and think tank developing new socio-political ideas and practical solutions for Germany.

Interdisciplinary orientation and practical relevance is the basis for Petra Liedl`s work. She has extensive teaching and research experience. Petra has been developing user-friendly planning tools particularly for the conceptual stage of integrated planning projects in an international context. These tools allow architects and investors to follow the interaction between climate and building parameters and help them to evaluate their design with respect to comfort and energy in a fast and cost-effective way.
