Alcove 9: An Annotated List of Reference Websites

Literature in English: Literary Criticism

Although some literary criticism can now be found through the free Internet, the vast majority of scholarly criticism is still found in print or through subscription databases accessible through libraries. Standard indexes to literary criticism available at most academic libraries include the Modern Language Association International Bibliography (MLAIB), the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL), Humanities Index/Abstracts, and numerous other published bibliographies and indexes. A number of the Web sites found through the "Site Directories" section of this site will lead to individual author sites. Such sites typically contain brief biographical information, bibliographies, chronologies, and some essays or articles of literary criticism.

Online Literary Criticism Collection from the Internet Public Library
Contains critical and biographical websites about authors and their works selected by librarians for their usefulness. It is browsable by author, title, nationality, or literary period.

Library Spot: Literary Criticism
A collection of links including Voices from the Gaps (female writers and artists of color) and Guide to Philosophy, as well as more general literary criticism.

LiteraryHistory.com
LiteraryHistory is an index to full-text internet published articles covering more than 250 major American and British writers. Browsable indexes are more effective than the search mechanism.

Yahoo Search Directory: Literature > Criticism and Theory
A collection of sites by Yahoo linking to categories such as theorists and critics, reader response theory, and hypertext theory.

Feminist Literary Criticism and Theory
Primarily a bibliography of print sources relating to literary genres, specific historical periods, politics and literature, and literary theory, as well as links to some well-known feminist writers.

A Bibliography of Literary Theory, Criticism and Philology
An extensive bibliography using an FTP site rather than hypertext links listing authors and critical schools worldwide, as well as specific subjects including literary theory, literary history, aesthetics, semiotics, etc.

Introductory Guide to Critical Theory
This site contains general introductions, lists of terms, sample applications, lesson plans, and links for Marxism, Postmodernism, Gender and Sex, New Historicism, etc.

Early Modern Literary Studies
